Located in Salem, in the heart of Southern Illinois, Hindman Manufacturing was founded in 1947 and now operates as Americana Outdoors. The company mission is to produce products that will enhance your quality of life, while providing jobs which give satisfaction to our employees. Creating a comfortable and pleasing outdoor environment is what we do best with our product lines.
Americana Outdoors started out as Hindman Manufacturing Co. in 1947 founded by Milo “Rip” Hindman and was located in Central City.
We purchased the company in 1985 to keep it from being sold and moved out of the area. In the years since our management team has carefully expanded the company through building new facilities, modernization of equipment and acquisitions.
Prior to 1985, the majority of the company’s sales have were directly tied to products used by the manufactured housing industry. Since then our corporate strategy has been to diversify our sales into other markets. Our focus was to pursue new sectors in residential and home improvement markets and also commercial markets. With the rise of large home improvement chains we have developed great working relationships with companies such as Lowe’s and Menards.
In 1991 we completed a buyout of Shelter Products, Inc., a manufacturing of park shelters and merged the operations into ours. This acquisition allowed us to develop a close working relationship with another local business, ESI, for all of our structural steel.
In 1992 we acquired Shade & Comfort a residential and commercial fabric awning company and merged their operations into ours.
By 1996 our sales growth required us to expand manufacturing and office space. We purchased 10 acres in the Salem Illinois Industrial Park and built a 120,000 sq ft. plant which included 12,000 sq ft of office space
In 1997 we created a new start up called Americana Powder Finishing a state of the art metal coating operation to paint aluminum and steel. Americana Powder Finishing is now the largest powder coater in Southern Illinois. We coat for many local companies such as Jarco Inc a manufacturer of propane delivery and transport trucks and New Metal Fabrication as well as large companies like Allied Tube & Conduit in Chicago and Grain Systems Inc. with plants we service in Assumption, Paris, Newton and Flora.
In 2006 our growth required us to expand our plant to 156,000 sq ft.
In 2011 Lowe’s approached us about designing a modular wheel chair ramp system to be branded with their Gatehouse store brand. With our in house engineering and CAD expertise we were able to beat out a Chinese manufacturer and another US firm with our design. This new system is being stocked in over 300 Lowe’s stores today with expansion into more stores later this year.
In early January of 2013 we acquired PW Athletic and Patterson-Williams a premier manufacturer of outdoor athletic equipment and commercial outdoor site furnishings. PW Athletic was founded in 1919 and is located in Mesa, AZ. We are excited to be expanding some PW Athletic manufacturing here in Salem to support sales expansion on the east coast.
Today with our diversified customer base our products are sold in over 3000 of our customer’s retail locations across the United States.
Our companies have always prided themselves in giving our customers excellent service!
